How to Apply for Government Jobs in South Africa
Where public service vacancies are published, how to complete the Z83 form and the mistakes that get applications disqualified.
Public service jobs are popular because they offer stable employment and benefits. They also follow strict application rules — and many applications are rejected simply because a step was missed.
Where government vacancies are published
- The DPSA Public Service Vacancy Circular, published regularly on the Department of Public Service and Administration website, lists posts across national and provincial departments.
- Department and provincial government websites often publish their own adverts.
- Municipal websites and notice boards for local government posts.
- Job platforms such as JobsAlertSA, which link back to the official source. Always check the official advert before you apply.
Read the advert carefully
Each advert states the post, salary level, centre (location), requirements, duties, enquiries contact, closing date and — importantly — exactly how to apply. Some posts require applications by email, some through an online portal and some by hand delivery or post. Follow the stated method exactly.
The Z83 application form
Most public service posts require the new Z83 form (introduced in 2021). Key points:
- Use the current version of the form — older versions may be rejected.
- Complete every relevant section and sign it. An unsigned Z83 can disqualify your application.
- Include the post reference number exactly as it appears in the advert.
- Attach a detailed CV.
Under current practice, many departments only require certified copies of qualifications and ID from shortlisted candidates — but always follow the instructions in the specific advert, because they can differ.
Common reasons applications are disqualified
- Missing or unsigned Z83
- Applying after the closing date
- Not meeting the minimum requirements in the advert
- Sending the application to the wrong address or email
- One application for multiple posts when separate applications were required
Beware of job scams
Government departments do not charge fees to apply, and they do not ask you to pay for “processing”, “training” or “medical tests” to secure a post. If someone asks you for money, it is a scam. You can report suspicious listings on JobsAlertSA.
Be patient
Government recruitment can take several months. If you have not heard back within three months of the closing date, many departments ask you to consider your application unsuccessful.
